Opportunity:

Founded in 1871, this organization has grown to be a $13.5 billion company with 99 plants worldwide. They are a diversified global industrial company providing products, services and integrated solutions that improve air quality in homes and buildings, secure homes and buildings, transport and protect food and other perishables, and improve industrial productivity. Their operations are divided into the four sectors of Security Technologies, Industrial Technologies, Residential Solutions, and Climate Solutions.

This organization was utilizing a legacy, highly customized Remedy deployment that was no longer able to support the needs of the organization. Asset Management was not just a struggle, it was a full-time job for a department of employees who were mostly collecting the data, but not able to provide organizational action or insight based upon the asset records.

Our Approach and Recommendations:

The new solution required multiple software vendors, for a highly complex implementation of BDNA, Flexera, and ServiceNow. The ServiceNow modules included Change, Request, Hardware/Software Asset Management, Contract Management and Reporting. Their new CMDB was derived from integrations of Discovery, BDNA and Flexera. Flexera was deployed to normalize software licenses and BDNA was utilized to normalize hardware data. Contender provided not only architectural oversight but also project management oversight of the entire implementation. The CMDB was utilized to create an interactive system that synchronized all asset information and linked asset data in various key systems across the enterprise.

The Results

Duplication of data was avoided, while creating a powerful cross connection relationship between hardware, software, network, applications, people, financial and contractual data. Likewise, Change Managers would benefit from this single source of truth, while admins and users alike could search support on asset attributes and business descriptions along with wildcard lookup capability. Service Request was linked to Asset Management to create orders and tasks, track real time life-cycle changes to assets and all the while synchronizing asset naming conventions and changes to asset discovery tools, including Microsoft’s System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM).

This dynamic organization has been able to provide significantly improved visibility of assets, a vastly improved change process, and increased productivity using the robust IT resource requisition tool. Through Software Asset Management, it is anticipated that license reconciliation will result in cost reductions providing an ROI in the first year.
